Meet the Board - Steve Ewers Construction Director for TJ Evers

An introduction to Steve

Steve Ewers Construction Director for TJ Evers

Employed by Michael Evers in the late 1980s as trainee site agent whilst undertaking an HND in building followed by a graduate diploma in construction management. Worked my way up through TJ Evers as a site manager, onto a contracts manager, and to my current position as construction director.

Married to Helen for 33 yrs with two grown up children, Thomas a motor mechanic and Georgia, a business consultant working for a blue chip company.

I enjoy playing walking football (....don't laugh until you've tried it), skiing, motorsport and life in general.

Why you decided to become a director

My dad always told me not to criticise anything without being prepared to stand up and contribute or help make a change

What your role is in your own companies, and what your companies do…

I work for TJ Evers as the Construction Director whilst running some projects as a contracts manager. I look after a team of contracts mangers and 15 site based managers at various stages in their careers. As a director I also have responsibility for training, capital plant and health and safety.

TJ Evers are a traditional building contractor undertaking a range of projects in the East Anglia Region

I am also the chairman and director of ECTA, the Essex construction training association which has 60 other local contractors as members allowing us all to benefit due the groups ability to represent to the CITB and take advantage of shared knowledge and the ability to source subsidised training

What drives you?

It used to be the product of our efforts, buildings dotted around East Anglia, now its the people I have employed and see how they have built their careers a and families. This is when the responsibility of being a director hits home.

What impact you’ve seen with EB Safety Group

The safety group is now in a period of stability and controlled business planning. The new reporting system allows for the better analysis of a members performance which will in turn mean safer sites, the ultimate aim of all of us at EB Safety

What your looking forward to….

To improve standards and improve on the level of performance with regard to health and safety on the members sites. To work with other like minded groups within construction to make us proud of the fantastic industry we work in
