Neil Long, HSE Advisor, EB Safety Group

Even when I was still at school, I knew I wanted a job where part of my role would be out and about and not stuck behind a desk from 9 to 5 every day. I wanted purpose, a job that didn’t make me want to stay in bed on a Monday morning, so I’m pleased to say I’ve got just that.

Originally with a background in the landscape industry I can reflect on an increasing awareness of health & safety, both in that industry and in my own personal career journey. Initially dealing with a mix of large, national contractors and small sub-contractors, the acknowledgement of health & safety principles, and the practical application into the day-to-day were often far apart. I’m pleased to say that I have seen big improvements in that industry, although there’s always room for improvement.

With career experience in other sectors including warehousing & logistics, and even setting up and running an artisan bakery & café, my knowledge and application of health & safety principles and practices has grown immensely leading me to study my NEBOSH in 2018. From there, the management of health & safety has continued to be an ever-increasing part of my roles through further experience in landscape management and construction, including the construction of a gold medal winning garden at the Chelsea Flower Show.

I joined EB Safety Group as Health & Safety Advisor in May 2022 where I manage our inspection reporting software and our Job Book, ensuring that with our Regional Health & Safety Advisors, we provide the coverage and service our members want. Thankfully, I also get out of the office undertaking premises inspections and site visits assisting the team with holiday cover, all the time expanding my knowledge and experience in an ever evolving and growing industry.
